On Saturday (21 May) members of Entwistle Street Residents Association held a special community event to rally support for its ‘Our Backfield’ project.
The project has been launched by residents in the Entwistle area of Tonge Moor to reclaim an area of land that runs behind homes in the street, down to Bury Roadand behind the town’s Matalan.
The community event began with the grand unveiling of new gates, designed by pupils from Moorgate Primary School. There was also Three Billy Goats Gruff story time, face painting, a community litter pick, organised walks across the site and free refreshments for all.
Residents began campaigning to improve the former landfill site last year and bring it back into use as a community space, after it became overgrown and attracted antisocial behaviour.
The group consulted locally on ideas for the area and set about improving public access by installing gateways and paths. Future plans include planting a bog garden and creating a maze at the highest vantage point.
It’s fantastic to see everyone’s hard work taking shape and I can’t wait to see how this exciting project develops over the coming months. The community has really taken ownership of this project and the end result will be a special place for each and every one of them to enjoy.
